Couple, help harassing borrowers for more money, reserved | Coimbatore News

COIMBATORE: Peelamedu Police filed three cases on Friday night against a couple and their accomplice for lending money to three people at exorbitant interest rates and attempting to extort more money from them.
A policeman identified the accused as Senthilkumar, his wife Ambika, from Mookambigai Nagar at SIHS Colony near Singanallur, and Singaravelu, who is from Salem.
The officer said he received complaints against the trio on Friday from three residents of Thanneerpanthal.
In one of the complaints, he said, Bhuvaneswari, 43, wife of Vijayan, said she had borrowed 4.5 lakh from the couple in 2016 by submitting signed blank check sheets and stamps , as well as a promissory note. “Bhuvaneswari said she settled the loan in 2021 by paying the couple 10 lakh interest and principal in installments. But the couple refused to return the checks and stamps. They demanded extra 8 lakh for the same. Singaravelu threatened her with dire consequences.
Another plaintiff, C Irulappan, 48, from Sivasakthi Nagar, said he borrowed 1 lakh from the couple in 2019 by submitting signed bank checks, stamps and a promissory note. “As he was repaying the amount with 6% interest in 2021, the couple demanded 12% interest and another 5 lakh to return the documents to him. Their accomplice also threatened him.
In another complaint, according to the officer, J Amutha, 38, a seamstress from Om Vinayaga Street, said she had borrowed 1.5 lakh from the couple in 2019 at 6% interest and had returned the same with interest last year. “But the couple demanded 12% interest and another 5 lakh to return the documents,” the officer said.
Peelamedu Police have registered three separate cases against the trio under Section 4 of the Tamil Nadu Charge of Exorbitant Interest Prohibition Act and have launched a search for them. tnn
